Cabbies' Legal Action Threat

DISGRUNTLED members of the Burnley Hackney Carriage Association are threatening legal action if plans to put more black cabs on the road go ahead.

Councillors at Tuesday night's Executive meeting are expected to back plans to abolish restrictions on the number of black cab licences.

There are currently 34 black cab licences in operation in Burnley and Mr Mohammed Ibrar, chairman of Burnley Hackney Cab Association, feels that opening up the market would have a detrimental effect on the town.

"Opening up the market would not benefit Burnley, it would only serve to make things worse," he said. "With Burnley town centre being mainly pedestrianised and the one-way system in use, there is no room on the roads for any more cabs. If the plans are given the go-ahead then we are going to take legal action. It's not a road we want to take but we feel that there may be no other option." A report published in October 2003 stated there was an unmet demand for taxis in the borough. However, a more recent survey, carried out in September, showed there was no unmet demand for taxis.

Mr Ibrar said: "I don't understand why they are wanting to delimit the numbers when the last survey showed that there is no unmet demand. We are one of the best in the country for picking up passengers, with people not having to wait longer than 30 seconds, so it doesn't make sense."

I quite agree with you, the old style union approach does not work, you have to educate the council... and Councillors....
But then again , you first have to educate the people who are representing the trade,

We already have a true professional, I hear your mob are welcoming back your main man. Being a true T&G man you'll know who Im talking about?
Getting back to the main point of this thread you'd better get your boys up to Burnley and try and save your Hack Brothers a few quid.

The problem with unions is that there is too much infighting from branch to branch, and even at national level. That is why I do not represent the T and G in Sefton.... and as for the other lot, if they have good representation they won't go there and if it's bad someone will be paying a lot of money out for nothing ...
