I remember well the Tory party poster from the seventies, with the crocodile of unemployed waiting to sign on. "Labour isn't working"

I was reminded of it when I was dropping off a train crew at Sheffield station on Saturday evening. There must have been 80+ Hacks double parked in a big queue waiting to get onto the station rank.

No unmet demand there, then.

This has got to be happening up and down the country, it most certainly is here.

I cannot understand why Unions/Associations are not fighting this on safety issues. As I have said before and believe me it does happen there are drivers out there working in excess of 70/80 hours per week.

This is dangerous to the general public and to the drivers themselves.

Haven't been to Sheffield since I lived there in the eighties, but I suspect the real problem is that immigration isn't working

So which of them would you rather didn't have a cab just like you? :?

Last time I dropped off at Heathrow, in fact every time I drop off there, there are hundreds of London black cabs waiting.

And those lads earn f*** all don't they? :?

I would imagine there are drivers in every council area that work those areas.

But if you want to join my crusade for a maximum working week, then welcome aboard.

But there aren't many of us there.

I don't recall suggesting there should be a cull in Sheffield, I merely made an observation.

But I'll guess that a good few will be bankrupt before the year is out. Still, nevermind eh? You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs, can you Sussex?

But who is in a better position to decide if the job's worth it, the folks in Sheffield, or the likes of you and me?

We have the same problem here in the borders, 100 cabs trying to get into 9 spaces, the rest are ranked up in a side street waiting to get on or for any punter that decides they don't like the look of the cabs on the rank and jump into any they fancy that are parked up

Here in Bournemouth Hacks are still limited, and there are days here when you cant get on certain ranks!

Kinda like the herding instinct isn't it.

Cabbies seem to prefer huddling in city centre ranks, kinda like a social club, bumping their gums about how bad things are.

Thing is, that if you live outwith the city centre getting a cab on the street is like hen's teeth.

And what happens is that folks stop trying, they just fone for a booked ride. Only, more often than not it seems nowadays, that ride will be a PHC.

That's why they're expanding and the hacks' work is shrinking.

Yet, we have the trade gurus telling us they are businessmen. When they couldn't run a menage.

Perhaps you would like to explain though why it is only the taxi trade which shouldn't be subject to the same unrestricted market forces as every other commercial sector?

And why it is taxi drivers alone in our allegedly modern free market economy that shouldn't be allowed to run their own taxi (business)?

Unrestricted Market Forces.

The Airline industry is restricted.

The Rail industry is restricted.

And there's only one Monopolies Commission. How unfair is that?

I can choose between 3 low cost airlines flying from my local airport to Alicante.
We have both Midland mainline and Central trains to choose from for rail travel.

Try starting a new airline travelling between Heathrow amd JFK

A new train service between Kings Cross and Edinburgh

And a new monopolies commission.
