Made a few phone calls, they're not licenced but do they need to be as they claim to be a Chauffeur service rather than Private Hire.

If anyone could tell me the difference between the two I would appreciate it.

Newboy, there is no difference.

To try and put it succinctly

If you offer a driver and a vehicle for Hire or reward you are required to be licensed either as a Hackney or Private Hire (unless you are covered under the operations of a PSV licence).

The only exemptioons that I am aware of is if

You use the vehicle solely for weddings and funerals

You use the vehicle solely for one specific customer under a contract with them that lasts for more than seven days.

Thinking about the above out loud.

So if I was an operator taking bookings and I set up a completely seperate company that ran executive vehicles.

Could that executive vehicle company contract to do work solely for its customer, the operator, and then claim to have a contract with a sole customer?

And thus avoid being licensed?

Discuss

Thanks again for your answer Tom, maybe that's how they do it, The Franchisee could be contracted to the group & all bookings done through h/o perhaps.

It would be interesting to know what insurance cover they have?

But if you look at the advert, then they are operating as many other firms do.

The only difference is the others are licensed.
