Testing is done as and when yearly, its just the licencing which is done that way, saying that testing was but they changed it a few years ago.

So the council test a vehicle in, say, July, but only license it in May? :?

How hard would it be if there was one set of rules nationwide. Not every little tinpot council making up their own rules it seems as they go along. Also a set maximum fare throughout the country so the punters have at least some idea of how much a cab ride would be were ever

The councils like to have their little powers.
If wages and the cost of living were the same all over the country, then fares could be the same.

The cost of living isn't the same though and the average wage is very different across the country.
Are you sugesting that the maximum fare nationwide should be based on the minimum wage?

Not at all but what a thought and I personally do not think there is a big difference in the cost of living across the country

Realy? Try this website to get some comparisons.

Try Carlisle to Kingston upon Thames. Or just have a play. Some of the results are frightening.

I think that's sort of what the DfT are looking at doing via guidance.

That would be a problem, as those dripping in riches in London can afford to pay a lot more than the cave dwellers up north. :D

But a formula based on local conditions i.e. local vehicle costs and average regional wages, could be a goer. :-k

Just an update on this, the york "temporary" licence is for 12 months this is from taxi licencing, and will remain licenced for the duratrion, regardless of the out come of the appeal.
