The issue with space savers are mentioned above and I'm going to add fuel to the fire with this.

The other weekend early on Friday night a driver had a puncture, he put he spacesaver on and carried on working.

Saturday the spacesaver was still on the vehicle he carried on working the Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Sunday night the spacesaver was still on the vehicle plus the driver was still working the car.

Monday afternoon the spacesaver is still on the vehicle and driver is still working it.

This is why Councils don't like them.

Did he have a problem whilst the spacesaver was on the vehicle?

We've got one of his relations (lol), very similar tale could be told, on various occasions. He now got a full size spare on a steel wheel fitted. Guessing he fvcked his alloy this time.

Don't know, they are only designed to be used as a get through and not long term use.

The fact that he managed to work all through the weekend would sugest that there were no problems. Most people would have got a new tyre first thing on the saturday morning and that would be that. However even if the spare was a full size spare it would still mean that he wouldn't have replaced it until the monday so the potential for a problem was still the same.

Just because he didn't come a cropper, is hardly proof that it is safe.
These things are designed as a "get you home" and are not intended to be used for a prolonged period.

I think you may be misunderstanding me a bit. I am not condoning the use of the spacesaver. My point is that he didn't replace the tyre regardless of what was being used on the car. Most people would have replaced the tyre at the first oportunity. If he had had a problem with the spacesaver he would not have had a spare to put on.

I don't know about midlander's example, but the tyres are only speed rated to 50mph. The driver in my case thinks that's for round the houses. God only knows at what rate he goes to the airport. (btw he has a Octavia VRS, probably chipped to the max)

My point exactly.
