The value of 9 year old taxis round here is about £300. A plate transfer and pit test are about £200.

So in theory you could buy, plate and pit a 9 year old taxi every year for 20 years (£10k) for less than the price of a new car that you could only keep on for 10 years !

Best of all the scrap value would be about £200, so if you got a cab that still had a years pit on it your car purchase cost would only be £100 p/a

I don't think the words 'decent' and '£1000' are a reality but good luck and they changed the policy half way through last year so just think of how much you could have saved if you'd done it then. Don't forget when you buy your £1000 vehicle to make sure you change everything that could go wrong with it because at that age it will go wrong and as it will be your vehicle you will need to pay for it all yourself and it will involve time off the road. It's a bit harsh saying Marks cars are rebuilt, Cat C but I think there may be an element of truth in that. If you want a decent settle car you need to know where to go to get one

Fortunately I'm pretty handy with the spanners and have a workshop unit due to having a former car sales pitch.

Well my 8 year old Mondeo with 400k+ miles on the clock is. No dents or scratches (the pit test wont allow any), the interiors spotless, no tears or rips in the upholstery or carpets and all the mechanicals are fine - mostly due to regular maintanence and 6 monthly pit tests.

Yet it's only worth £300, maybe £500 if I sold it as a taxi already pitted with equipment fitted. There's someone on the fleet selling their '55 plate octy for £1500, they take great pride in it and looking at it you'd think it had just come off the production line. And yet there are 2 yr old cabs that look absolute sheds.

I see it as an encouragement to buy newer vehicles. If you want to use older vehicles then fine but testing should be more frequent.
