Hermes workers are "workers under the direction of the company" trouble is years ago not one of them had the courage to take it too an Industrial Tribunal at which their legal fees would have been met by a certain Union Branch ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,guess who =D> =D>

Very likely i dont know the full details of that arrangement for sure your local Union would know given the precise details, plenty to be gained by achieving that status :D

The mighty Businesspost had "self employed" owner drivers SOME of whom rented a "van in a box" deal off Northgate but BP had nothing to do with the van deal and the drivers COULD (in theory) do any work outside of the multidrop parcels ...........

the crux of the issue is are the Drivers required to work or cover rounds on a regular basis if so workers under the direction no argument !
