I'm probably totally wrong but, if it's on a specified route, does it qualify as a taxi-bus?

a WHAT?

Mr Cabbyman wrote taxi-bus!

I think some sections of the Transport Act 1985 allowed for such things, with a raft of conditions & 'hoops to jump thro' before being legal & the HC trade just laughed.

I think this is available to PH also. I've yet to see a PH company take advantage either

i think you are thinking of a "restricted o-licence" whereby a HC or PH operator can have upto 2 "minibuses" (i.e. 9-16 passengers) where they do not form part of his regular business.....or some such

Maybe but you don't need a restricted PCV license to do it.

I was speaking to the good folks of VOSA at the taxi show and they put it to me very clearly that the days are very numbered for the 'restricted' scam. :D

Clearly they can't revoke a license already issued without good reason, but as for re-issuing after the 5 years, well that's a different matter. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Of course to run legally you either need to have a hackney or private hire plate, councils can only plate up to 8 passengers, or a PCV operators license and a vehicle disc. This can either be a full PCV operators license or if this is not your main work it can be a restricted PCV license. The main differences from a vehicle point of view is that a hackney or private hire should have the relevent council plates displayed, although some councils may grant an exemption from displaying them, and the PCV should have an orange or blue disc in the front window.

I believe that the NLcA have a very good record at the appeals.

I hope they do.

Accounts will be asked for, and evidence that the restricted scam isn't your main business.

If the NLcA can accommodate that then their members will be ok.

Just hope they haven't got any members that have two of these restricted licenses (i.e. four vehicles) in the same household.

Funny you should mention that because what is the position if one family member has one in the name of one business and the other has a different business name?
