Land Rover Freelander.

Does anyone know of a council that licenses these as taxis? :?

I saw a Landrover Discovery Taxi in the Lake District over the summer, couldn't tell you which council had licensed it but it had a roofsign and doorstickers advertising the companies number, it could well have been a HC but I couldn't swear to it.

I think a few operate out of Gatwick Airport, but they are PH not HC.

yeah the ones that operate out of Gatwick are for Virgin limo service, havn't seen them for a while though, unsure if they were licensed even for PH, as some LA's still allow courtesy cars to unlicensed if all they do is one contract and it is on a courtesy basis, would like to hear from anyone in Gatwick's LA area then we could get this straight :roll:

They were by the way Discovery's My wife has a Freelander, doubt the leg room in the back would be enough on the Freelander to get a license.

Ive seen the Gatwick ones drop off in Brighton a few times.
Very nice and brand spanking new.
Still they can afford it. We charge £35 to Gatwick and they charge £60+ to Brighton. :shock:

I bumped into one of the drivers in McDonnalds at Gatwick, and was told they are company vehicles and the drivers were on an hourly rate, what I would like to know is are they licenced and if so who is licensing them?

The ones i have seen are licensed by Crawley.
The drivers looked very smart so i assume they are employed.

Did they have plates on the back, were they Discovery's, surely not Freelanders?

The drivers being very smart is no indication they are self employed, if it was a virgin vehicle then I guess they would insist on smart attire.

Alex, I doubt the Freelander could be a licensed vehicle, why do you raise this question, have you seen one that was licensed?

This interests me as I am always looking for different vehicles to set my fleet aside from the rest, I know they make an automatic deisel now that's what my wife has, as do many others recently, which is handy in London. Mercedes bought out a Deisel automatic S class this year.

I still say in my opinion the leg room in the back is too economical, London have a minimum depth which I am certain ours would not meet.

I did know a driver who used a Range Rover for Chauffering, he only had it for a short while, which indicates it was not a suitable vehicle, He got rid before vehicle Licensing in London though, so don't know if it would have been passed or not.

There are as many, issuses as far as I am concerned with using four wheel drive vehicles for hire, old ladies for instance would struggle with the height getting in and out. Especially in London where there is already too much confussion for the general public in identifying licensed vehicles from unlicensed.

I would say this vehicle is unsuitable for this purpose.

Loads of room in the boot for luggage though, so I guess if they could get licensed you would charge the fare as if it was an estate car?

forget freelanders,,in the past few weeks in my neck of the woods i have seen bmw 325 diesals,, saab sport tdi`s, 5 series bmws, the lot,,cars you wouldnt see drving around years ago as hire cars are now everywhere,,i think it may be a convenient way to pay the instalments by registering as a phc,, :sad:

Same down here, many years ago it would have been sierras, cavilers, 405s, and bluebirds. you mostly get the modern version of the family saloons but in the last few years there have been more and more brand new exe motors being used as PH. 3 and 5 series beemers E class mercs, jags, Audi A6's, i even saw a Lexus the other day! so there must be money in it!

And those big 7 seater MPVs are not cheap to buy new either. i was looking at the diesel citroen C8 the other day, £18K !!! :shock: and that was WITH the £3k cash back offer!

IN hartlepool (cheapest tarriff in country) there are plenty of bmw's,mercedes,lexus.top of range volvos, you name they are there. considering the cheapest tarriff in country they are doing well with there motors all phv's.
