I have found out that if you are a holder of an HGV or PSV licence, certain licencing authorities will not require you to take a medical to either gain a taxi/private hire drivers licence or to renew your licence when you reach 45 and then every 5 years after. So can any of you wise people on here tell me if your LA operates like this, if so please can you let me know? I know of 1 that does this, is this the way its supposed to be or is it a 1 off? your input on this matter will be appreciated. Oh and another interesting fact this LA will not reqiure you to take a driving test either, although non HGV/PSV licence holders will. agabbycabbie. |

This is what is stated on there web site under taxi licencing Driving test Once you have passed the knowledge test we will arrange your driving test. If you hold a HGV or PSV licence you will be exempt from taking a driving test or medical. |

Doesnt matter when you passed, you need a group 2 medical to renew it at 45 and every 5 years till 65 no medical, licence gets revoked until you supply one. Thats my situation in september HGV expires day before birthday, and taaxi about same time. So what they are saying is if your HGV/PSV is valid you are medicly fit to drive anything. agabby |

By the way i will be ringing them tomorrow and put this to them. Since starting in this trade i cant believe the BS LAs get away with or the ways things are done, i did 18 years on trucks before taxis/PH and the laws governing them are the same from one end of the country to the other, no arguements lol |

Ok just an update, I have found 3 LAs which do not require taxi/ph drivers to take a medical if they hold a current hgv/psv licence. And yes skippy1 you are lucky.(it will be hidden in the cost of of your licence)lol But when you can get a group 2 medical done for as cheap as £20 isnt that better than being forced to go to your own doctor. or occy health If DVLA will accept them, then these 2 bit councils should as well. My doctor wants £90 for each medical form, robbing git, can get both done for £54. |

Ok list so far Cambridge 1st i knew of rest wiltshire suffolk coastal north herts poss sefton amber valley arun, you part of the country isnt it sussex, littlehampton will update as i find them. this doesnt only help me but any driver that holds a current hgv/psv who doesnt know and unwittingly had to take a taxi medical. agabby |

I will be amazed if they do. They have their rules set in stone and it will take much longer to change them than you have. Not right, but that's the way it is.

Wycombe district used to accept applications from hgv/psv holders without a medical for their taxi badge but if you apply now chances are they wouldnt know anymore with staff changes they just seem to change rules as they go along |

If I had a HGV licence I somehow doubt id wanna be driving a taxi/PHV given I coul dearn anything from £15/hr upwards plus overtime/holiday pay/SSP/pension, etc, etc... |

Ha ha £15 an hour you must be joking, not many give you a pension either, and alot of the HGV jobs being advertised now are not giving much more than minimum wage. Agencies advertise those rates but you never get them, and dont believe the hype about driver shortages either, its a ploy by hgv training schools to get mugs to part with £1500 or more to pass. Taxiing must be really bad in you manor. |
