heard on the rank last night that one of the Falkirk Drivers Associations is planning a wee bit of mischief. They are asking to see all the applications for driver and plate licences (taxi and PH) and lodging an objection to them on the grounds of there being no need to add to the already over manning of the trade. I have been asked to do the same, along with reps from the other firms in the town, to (hopefully) bring the application process to a grinding halt. A small, but significant measure, or a waste of time/paper? I'm not sure, but it may bring the problem to the attention of the powers that be, before something more militant is considered. |

Do people outside of the licensing process have a right to object to licenses being granted? |

Down here cab drivers making false claims against another cab driver is a criminal offence, and the driver can claim compensation.

Surely, if they pass the 'fit and proper' test, they cannot be refused a licence? |

haven't had time to follow up on this as yet. I think it's a delaying tactic to clog up the processing of new applications, rather than a deliberate attempt to besmirch the name of any applicant. If I see the person who is "credited" with thinking up the idea, I'll give you his reasoning behind it. good point about being able to object from outside the cooncil/polis/cro, something else I'll have to check on before taking any pen to paper. |

I don't think there's any restriction on who can object to the grant of a licence, but I can't see what the proposed action would achieve, since it would just prolong the relevant committee meeting slightly since councillors would just wave through the applications on the basis that there are no valid grounds for objection? |
