One of my sons only got a six months ban for a string of offenses including no insurance. Of course he is not a taxi driver though.

If as he says he forgot, and given the fact it was a weekend that would explain the 2 days deficit as the insurance offices are closed then

Should have insured it before the weekend. How can you forget to insure your car? Mine was due on the 10th of this month, I've had 2 letters and 3 phone calls telling me my policy is due and they've found these prices. Sounds like he's trying to pull a fast one. What would have happened in the event of an accident?

I suspect he was looking to earn the insurance money at the weekend he ran un-insured.

For me the issue isn't whether he is guilty or not, or the number of points issued, but whether he should have been banned thus losing his livelihood.

He should tell the crown court that his ban will have a massive effect on his family, and the 'exceptional circumstances' clause should come into play.

It says he was given six points for each offence, what were the offences. I thought there was just the one offence of driving without insurance :?

What alternative punishment would be satisfactory. If this driver had an accident whilst working uninsured I'm sure the comments on here would be completely different

mind you, if basic insurance was added to fuel duty there would be no uninsured drivers - apart from taxi drivers

Fortunately, there was no accident, but I think we all take your point toots.

Whilst it is wrong to speculate, I wouldn't bet against Sussex's theory of him working over the weekend to earn the money to pay for the insurance.

I suppose it is just about plausible that something "important" caused him to forget, but let's face facts... your vehicle insurance is pretty darned important too!!!....and you do get a few weeks notice to sort it! If it was a mistake, it's the kind of error you don't make twice!

All that said, taking his livelihood away for a year does seem a little harsh. I'd understand it if he had a history of offences, but he claims to never have been in any trouble. The fine and a stern warning over what a further lapse would incur may have been more appropriate.

Tell you what though....doesn't it make you mad when you compare this to what you can read in the press every day of the pathetic fines and "penalties" (if you can call them that) imposed on scumbags who have no licence, no insurance, no mot, no tax.....and usually a history of such offences! I'm going to start avoiding those TV programmes like Police Camera Action that tell you at the end what happened to those people featured. It's easy to end up in a rage hearing "no action taken" or "charges dropped" or my recent "favourite"...the guy with no insurance, MOT, licence or tax...in a cloned Range Rover Sport...who turned out to be an illegal immigrant as well! At the end of the TV prog..."No action taken, as he claimed asylum and immigration was looking into his case!" AAaaaarrrgh!!!

But he didn't.

The best way forward is to give him the points, and if he gains any more whilst they are still valid, then he will automatically lose his license.

why would he need a weekend to earn the insurance money when he can have 10 direct debits to pay it, say £100 a time?...

was his vehicle seized and crushed under new police powers?

oh, i see, the LOs noticed the "insurance gap"

so he must have admitted driving whilst unsinsured but where was the proof?

Not necessarily he may be attached to an office and if that is the case their records will show what work he did over that particular period of time :wink:
