Home Office looks at cop bribery claims
CRIME boss Tam McGraw's alleged corruption of police and council chiefs is to be probed by the Home Office. Officials will examine a dossier on 'The Licensee' after his frontmen were accused in court of bribery.
Taxi bosses David Deans, 44, and Robert Roden, 52, ran Glasgow-based Mac Cabs for McGraw before moving south to front Raffles Private Hire in Milton Keynes. The allegations were made in court in England by brave cabbie Dennis Edwards, who was cleared of harassing local licensing officials.
Judge Geoffrey Wickes threw out the case against Edwards and ordered a probe into his allegations. During the case, several people, including an ex-policeman and another taxi boss, alleged widespread corruption. A report was sent by police to the Crown Prosecution Service but they have made no decision. And a police probe was so limited and slow that a file was passed to the Home Secretary.
Last night, Edwards, who has received death threats, said: 'The only way this can be resolved is with a public inquiry. It's ridiculous that the police force was asked to investigate allegations about their own colleagues.
North East Milton Keynes MP Brian White said: 'The solicitor acting for Mr Edwards thought there was a danger the police were not taking it seriously. 'She asked me to bring the matter to the attention of the Home Office.'
In June, we revealed Deans was back in Scotland. He is running Penny Cars in Chapelhall, Lanarkshire. He is also linked to Streamline Radio Taxis in Bathgate, West Lothian. The McGovern crime family's taxi firm, Network Private Hire, is fronted by a former Glasgow Council taxi enforcement officer. In Edinburgh, private hire licensing is overseen by a senior policeman.
