Please don’t be sick in the back of our taxis CABBIES across Castle Point have signed up to be presentable, punctual and polite...as long as the passengers don’t throw up on their back seats. The borough’s main taxi operators have agreed to a Passengers’ Charter, essentially a promise to raise standards. As part of the agreement the firms have pledged their cabbies will always drive safely, be smart and on time. They will also ensure their taxis are clean, they refrain from smoking and will always take the shortest route to the destination. However, in return, passengers are expected to do their bit. They must be in a fit state to travel, treat drivers with respect and be able to pay at the start of the journey. Steve Wilson, manager of Benfleet-based Steve’s Radio Cars, backed the charter. He said: “Any agreement to improve the service and make cabbies more aware of the responsibilities has got to be welcomed. “But it’s a two-way process and let’s just say I hope to be cleaning sick out of the back of my taxis a lot less often.” The charter was brokered by the Quality Taxi Partnership, which consists of representatives from Essex Police, Castle Point Council – which licenses the cabs – and Essex Fire and Rescue Service. Chief Insp Keith Davies, the borough’s district police commander, said: “The adoption of the passenger charter eliminates all doubt and ambiguity about what people should expect when they hire a taxi, and how they’re expected to behave. “Our desire is people can be assured of their safety when they get into a taxi and drivers can be confident their fare is genuine and will behave with respect.” Cliff Brunt, chairman of Castle Point Council’s licensing committee, added: “Our local taxi firms are strictly regulated, but by signing up to this agreement they have shown an admirable willingness to further improve the quality of the service they provide.” |
