We know that a PHV, is not allowed to use the word TAXI on their vehicle, however we have today been informed that if they display www.********* taxis.co.uk as this is a website address this is allowed, also we have a Private Hire company in town who advertise TAXI in big letters on their outside wall and we are told this is also allowed as they are in the business of transporting people for hire or reward, the mind is confused |

Complain to the council's trading standards department.

We're private hire and our company is ********* taxis. Our door signs only have the name of the company on it without the taxis bit but I suppose when you have 93 taxis on your system it starts to get confusing, especially for the public who probably now think we're all taxis |

I was at a Licensing Board meeting today and the conditions for Private Hire Vehicles were amended from Quote: Any advertisements, signs, notices, numbers, marks, etc borne on the vehicle shall not consist of or include the word “taxi” or “cab” or “for hire” whether in the singular or plural or any word of similar meaning or appearance, whether alone or as part of another word and shall not suggest that the vehicle is a Hackney Carriage. To Quote: Any advertisements, signs, notices, numbers, marks, etc borne on the vehicle shall not consist of or include the word “taxi” or “for hire” whether in the singular or plural or any word of similar meaning or appearance, whether alone or as part of another word and shall not suggest that the vehicle is a Hackney Carriage.
Thus removing the word CAB from the conditions and allowing Private Hire Vehicles to now use this word on their vehicles. |

From my experience, many PH firms are using the word 'taxi' in their advertising without seemingly the bat of an eyelid from licensing offices. The firm you mention (where incidentally I will be starting next week) advertises as '...' Taxis, as does the other major operator in town. So too does the 2000-strong set-up in Sefton. The office signs have it on them, advertising does too - everything apart from door signs! Maybe the fact that they do have a small number of hacks on the system means that they can get around using the word 'taxis'. Or is it maybe just that the powers that be don't care? |

I have noticed that in the arrivals areas of some airports there are booking offices for taxis as well, all the cars are private hire. |
