We are all aware of the law on charging according to the meter and tariff when it comes to transporting persons within the licensing borough. Does that law vary in the case of carrying goods only; ie, No passengers on board? Is it still a legal requirement to charge no more than what's shown on the meter? Would the answer be different depending upon whether the carriage was arranged on the rank or pre-booked to a booking office? We are talking about hackney carriage not PHV. |

Are you talking about a mini house removal or student moving flat, where the personal belongings fill the whole of the rear of the cab compartment up to the roof lining except for one dicky seat for the punter to sit on. I've done a few of those in my time; they're great fun!! |

as i understood it, a HC/PH is not a "common carrier", as opposed to a "private carrier" when a passenger has his/her own goods. and you wont have GIT, personally id do it anyway, by quote on the run, why use a meter when theres no one in the car to see it?.... if your going outside you own LA you can charge what you want anyway.... what the hell, just do it |

Is it still a legal requirement to charge no more than what's shown on the meter? No. Yes. The tariff is for the hire of the vehicle, IMO it matters not what is transported. |

You cannot charge more than the meter traiff rates with a hackney carriage licence., its will always comes under hire and reward tariff. does not matter if is live cargo or not |

I dont follow the arguement though, a meter rate is far higher than a small van rate charged by couriers (60p per loaded mile one way) so even meter rate is win/win, its only the question of GIT that sticks but to be honest, is it really an issue? |

I am aware of a situation whereby a small job is being avoided by drivers. The 'agreed price' has been increased to make it more attractive but this exceeds the tariff; Hence the question. Many thanks for all your contributions. |
