Well spotted Wharfy, but I can't really see the link with the Greenways, unless you are meaning that green doesn't necessarily mean that something is environmentally friendly???

But I suspect 'greenways' alludes to the environmental aspect of the scheme - see below what I found on a website. BTW, David Begg, is the guy (I think!) who recently fell foul of the Govt in his guise as head man at the Commission for Integrated Transport, and was apparently quite critical of some of the Govt's transport policies.

just to enlighten those of you that do not no what greenways are, they are a bus width of road that is sectioned of on the kerb side of the road for buses &hackney cabs only, as you can understand it is very restricting.

Well it does, but it doesn't apply to public authorities carrying out regulatory functions, as far as I know. Dusty

PHC driver could have said that "greenways" are basically Bus Lanes painted green and that use of them is restricted to buses, cycles and taxis. Taxis are allowed since they are considered to be PUBLIC transport, whereas PHC are considered PRIVATE transport and therefore not allowed. Simple really. Many PHCs in Edinburgh pick up off the streets illegally, use bus lanes illegally and even rank in highly public places illegally, yet the authorities, including the police, keep their heads in the sand and conveniently ignore them. Oh, they did have a purge once - when a girl walked out of a restaurant, outside of which PHCs regularly ranked illegally, and entered a Merc, thinking it was a PHC, and ended up being raped. Pity this had to happen before action was taken, but the purge didn't last long. Taxis are harassed for minor defects, yet PHCs blatantly flout the law regularly and nothing gets done. No wonder friction exists between them. Old timer

By improving the local environment it will also be giving back people's freedom to walk and cycle. and quite right too, bus lanes are there to let people watch how public transport can be quicketr though of course they get demands from all and sundry to use them, over here they have gone a step further and got guided bus lanes where they are curbed off in the centre of the road and have nice bus shelters too! if passengers can cross the road without getting killed it might work. but its like everthing else we have to wrap these things up in enviornmental friendly barb, well they are not, diesel fumes from buses choke just as much as cars, at least cars carry passengers
