Hi all
Can you tell me if children count as a whole person or 1/2?

Yesterday two of us were called to same job, they specified a 7 seater.
I got there loaded up my E7 and went on my merry way.

Get back to the rank only to find out that another hack (someone you all know!!) tried to do the same job in his 5 seater metro.

Juat curious as I think it is illegal to carry 7 passengers in a 5 seater.

I think it depends on the ages of the children and the insurance provider

No half persons - licensed to carry 5 means exactly that, not 4 and 2 kids, 4 + 2 = 6 not 5!! Insurance don't come into the equation.

5 passengers means 5 souls/bodies, take extra at your risk, id have thought that was obvious

juniors/infants/babes should travel in a carrier or booster which takes up 1 seat so how can they count as half?

if they did a then an 8 seater could carry 1 adult and 14 infants?....

Each "person" counts as one for the number carried.

Your Tariff may say along the lines of "2 children count as one" but this is for the charging of the fare only.

If you are licensed for 5 and pick up 5 you are fine, if one of the 5 gives birth on the way, someone has to get out.

In my case it would be me, I have no towels or boiling water and I don't know how long you have to boil a new baby.

Our LA quote:

"The Driver of a Taxi shall not convey in the vehicle more than the number of passengers the Taxi is licenced to carry. A Child shall classified as a passenger."


Although in Privately owned vehicles the owner can carry Kids under three unrestrained on their lap and which do not count as a passenger taking up a seat.

Report him "Mr Motivator"? Sounds like he turned up, saw there were too many passengers, and declined the job. No rule against that is there?

Of course, one should bear in mind the weight of the passengers, (and driver too) when considering if a vehicle is overloaded.

It sounds like you have issues with this driver, "Mr. Motivator"

You will need evidence of an offence, not just your say so.

But you probably knew that, didn't you.

With byelaws written like this is it any wonder I get confused

The proprietor or driver of a hackney carriage shall convey or permit to be conveyed in such carriage a maximum number of 5 persons provided that a maximum number of 6 persons may be conveyed if 2 of such 6 persons are children under the age of 12 years and it is further provided that children apparently under the age of 5 years shall not be reckoned if accompanied by an adult

Where did you find this byelaw? It's archaic.
I suspect following it would find you in breach of one or other of the road traffic acts

Every child no matter how old they are count as one. Years ago they used to be classed as half but now they are a passenger.

Insurance companies treat children as a whole person.

Which makes bundles of sense cos when one of them is seriously injured in an accident, the payouts, quite rightly, can be millions and millions.

That said what does you council say? Do they say the vehicle is licensed for 4 but if 8 kids want to go home, is that ok?

Am I the only one who finds it rather strange that "Mr Motivator" is getting all beaten up about a driver who DID NOT load seven passengers into his five seater Metrocab?

And that tag. He sounds like one of those motivational speakers who come out with rubbish like "TEAM" (together everyone achieves more)
