Taxi Driver Online

We've just had a driver working for us that it turns out is bi-polar his behaviour was very erratic and last week we had to finish him as it was getting seriously hard work dealing with him. When he got his license he didn't tell the council about his condition and the fact that he was on medication (lithium) we have since informed the council about him and they are "looking into it" does anyone have any experiance of this sort of thing and do you agree that someone who is this ill shouldn't be granted a license.

How did he get through the medical ???

Aint Bipolar the new trendy name for manic depression? If the mood swings are severe then I'd reckon you were quite in paying them off as they never confessed to having such a serious condition when they got the job or their council licence....usually any serious type of depression would have barred them from getting a Taxi/PH licence in the first place.

Still........in this crazy screwed up PC country everybody should be allowed to do anything as it might otherwise be deemed to go against their human rights..

On a serious note, no-one that I'm aware of in our area. Will the fact he didn't declare his condition render him "not a fit and proper person"?

The driver should be refered to the Occupational Health Unit for assessment.

Only if his condition has already resulted in behaviour that could be considered a risk to public safety or he has been diagnosed and pronounced unfit should his licence be suspended with immediate effect. If undiagnosed this suspension should be pending a satisfactory report from the OHU.



I fail to see how that would arise. If he's been diagnosed it would be on his medical record unless very recently diagnosed in which case his medical practitioner will be duty bound to advise him to notify the local authority and the DVLA of his condition if this is likely to be an issue of his safety, that of his passengers or other road users.

If he fails to act on such advice from his medical practitioner then he is guilty of an offence.

He got through his class 2 medical by not telling anyone about this condition or the drugs that he's on. Also there is a question on the councils application form that reads
Are you being treated or taking any medication which might affect your ability to drive?

From what the coucil has told us he replied NO

our licensing officer thought that Bi-Polar meant he was attracted to men & women!!

The question is, is his medication known to impair the ability to drive?

I'm still at a loss to understand how he got through the group 2 medical without this being picked up. Surely his GP has to submit a pre-medical report to the OHU.

I think the pros and cons of bi-polar aren't necessarily the issue that could lose him his license, it's the fact that he didn't declare it.

On reading wikipedia it appears clear to me the reasons why.
