Our LA, is thinking of introducing private hire ranks in our town, of course the local giant PH company has piled on the pressure for this to happen.

Of course all 400 Hackney's are 100% against the idea.

Anyone have any experience of PH ranks, and stories that can be used to calm the HC drivers or even influence the LA to not allow these?

I think there is something in Leicester although they are not called ranks. They are places where private hire cars wait to pick up their pre booked fares. There are also seperate areas for hackneys to rank. The roads around this area are closed off to all vehicles for safety.

Well our bylaws require all PH to return to base, as HC drivers were happy with that, but if the council change the bylaws to suit the PH company, then should we expect to get something in return?

Are they ranks or parking/waiting spaces?

However if they are ranks then it wont be the hardest thing to do a 'test purchase' on.

I'm not sure a requirement to make PH go back to their offices would stand up in court, which is why I suspect your LO is looking at alternatives.

Well the local Lo are saying PH ranks, not sure what a PH rank is to be honest.

The current idea is to have one night time HC rank in the centre of town with Marshall's, and a PH rank a little further away. the distance is less than 300 yards away.

The LO have commissioned a private company to looking to the local problems but all I have heard from this company is some crap about a central booking agency that will of course cost HC along with paying for Marshall's that we currently don't have.

They have Private Hire ranks every weekend in Solihull town centre.

Fully authorised and approved by Solihull MBC too.

We've had one on our down town base for years (at least 30) but we don't call it a rank it's a queue
