Post subject:  private hire bookings
my friend was asking me the other day, if someone approachs his private hire vehicle for a taxi does he a. Take the fare b. Tell him to ring the firm saying he needs a taxi and say 1 of the drivers is here so he doesent have to wait so my friend can take the fare c. Give him the firms card and drive off,

The fact that he has been approached could lead to a plying charge, depending on where and when the approach took place.

If the customer takes a card, or the number is on the vehicle, and rings your company and you happen to be first turn then IMO you are ok to take the punter.

Otherwise it's a bit iffy.

"Pre-Booked"

thats PRE (prior to the event) and BOOKING (literally complying with the regs as all jobs should be noted down in a BOOK)

PRE ............BOOKING

If the base has a record of it before they get in the vehicle its OK

He should direct them to the nearest taxi rank, or give them a taxi number :D

b+c would be legal

its even possible that radioing the base to place a booking before letting the passenger gets in is lega, so long as the base has the details

Not unless he is first turn IMO, and the booking must come via the radio/data head.

Was he sitting in a prominent position with a roof light on?

Why does first in turn come into it, surely nearest car is just as good if not better :wink:

ahh, the old "rooflight on a private hire" chestnut....
no signs/no rooflight = private

for everything else theres beer goggles and its a taxi mate

I imagine most firms operate a list system rather than a nearest system.

But as long as the job is despatched in the normal way IMO it doesn't matter which system a firm uses.

But if they operate the nearest system, which I happen to believe is a sh** one, then they are more open to a charge of plying.

Scenario, you drop off at Gatwick someone sees your car and wants to travel back to your area. He phones your base number and books who gets the job you or one coming up from your base coz he's next in the queue?

most operate a "if its a good job send an inner circle car"....

i well remember a driver dropping at BHX (20 miles) and returning empty only to see another car/same circuit batting it over to BHX for a job that never went out over the radio and finding out the passengers had been ready when he dropped.

oh well, bang goes another office window when the radio goes through it
