Post subject:  Start up costs!
Just been made redundant and looking into taxiing.
Apart from the legal costs required by my local authority and insurance company, what other costs are there?
Blue plate or red plate?
I already have a suitable car but willing to upgrade.
Any advice would be so helpful!

Get your driver's license before looking at motors.

As Mr Jimbo alluded to, it varies from area to area.

In my area I reckon it takes 6 months and costs up to £600.

Your best bet is to learn the job before investing in a new car.
If you dont like the job then you have not lost out on a bad investment.

Blue plate (Taxi) will cost around £120 a week to rent, add another£100 if you want a car with it, or to buy a plate without a car, it will cost around £25,000-£30,000.

Red Plate (private hire) will cost around £1.20 a job with v.a.t your best bet is down this rout to see if you will enjoy the job.

And dont listen to people who say how great amounts you can earn with this company or that company. The trade is very bad in that area at them moment.

the plates in your area are only worth 25,000- 30,000 the town I come from they cost around 80,000+ as they are 50 restricted plates and you want 1 you have to buy of an exsisting owner.

I think we need to remind him that PH plates cost nothing, as do taxi plates in 70% of the country.

But the walking needs top start before the running, so a driver's license is the first small step.

Get a ph or hackney licence then work as a driver and see if you like the job first. Don't commit any redundancy money you may have got into buying into a trade you may not like.
