The Criminal Record Bureau has announced an increase in fees

With effect from 1 April 2005 the Criminal Records Bureau - responsible for conducting background checks on taxi and private hire vehicle drivers as well as those working with children and vulnerable adults - will be increasing its fees.

The fees for standard disclosures, which contain information relating to current and past criminal convictions and cautions, will cost £29. More detailed enhanced disclosures will cost £34.

The news comes as it is disclosed the CRB processes over 60,000 disclosures a week and, now in its' third year, has exceeded its public service standards.

Over the next few months the CRB will also begin a start a process of deregistering some 'registered bodies' who are authorised to conduct checks through it, if they do not have a sufficient need to use the service. No firm proposals have yet been published as to how or when this will take place, but in future these bodies will have obtain disclosures by acting through third-party 'umbrella' bodies who are themselves registered with the Bureau.
