As nearly every vehicle made today has both showing normaly the miles on the outside and Ks on the inside there is nothing to stop you using a vehicle with the Ks on the outside.
All European drivers who come over have theres this way Brum

From Construction and Use Regulations:

Save as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

Thus if that's the end of the story then it shouldn't matter which one is the dominant display, as long as both are displayed.

Well I've just spoken to the guy that owns the car, which he bought when he was in South Africa and then imported it to the UK via the Republic of Ireland. I read out your post to him

The car only displays kilometres per hour and there is NO subsidiary display showing miles per hour!

But the best bit is that the car passed the MOT today, despite the guy telling the garage that the speedometer only registers in kilometres per hour!!

Think I may have read something about the C&U Regulations having different requirements on speedos to the MOT requirements, so it's possible that he may pass an MoT without it being road legal.

Or perhaps I read that a speedo is unnecessary at all for an MoT but clearly it's an offence to drive without one on the road?

It's certainly the case that the speedo isn't tested for the MoT - they may be able to tell that it's working, but it could be reading anything.

Anyway, even if the garage didn't know the rules or just turned a blind eye your mate should be OK till the next time round at least.

The tacho in my LDV convoy displays KPH as the main units and MPH as the sub units. The odometer is in Kilometers.

I run an old 95 Japanese 4x4 import, its speedo and milometer read in Kilos, it just pased an MOT no problem....that said you can buy MPH stickers to insert over the KPH instrument cluster so that at least the speedo reads in MPH..
