hi all...
Does anybody know the answer to this
when renewing hackney license, the vehicle has to be insured for public hire at the time the license commences, if you have 30 day cover note and that expires but you are not using taxi at all, do you still have to have continuing cover on the vehicle

ok get ya, so is it legal to have a licensed taxi un-insured if the plate is still in force and you are not using taxi at all, or whilst it is licensed does it have to be insured

I suppose it all depends on your licensing conditions.

If they say you must be insured at all times, then you need to do so.

If they say your vehicle needs to be insured whilst working as a cab, then you should be ok.

However it would be interesting to see what law/by-law you have breached if the cab was de-plated and not on the road.

if its plated but off the road/out of sight (or even SORN) i doubt anyone would know, but your LA - having plated it on a cover note - could esily check to see if its insured using askmid

While the plate is on the vehicle, it must be insured, once a taxi always a taxi. However if for some reason you cannot work, or you have no drivers, most authorities will let you hand the plate back and have it returned when you resume business.
