Our LA will not license vehicles that don't have a spare, such as the Ford S Max. A local driver bought a 57 plate Vauxhall Zafira to replace an older one. The older one had a spare wheel, the new one didn't even have the fitting to hold a apare and he nearly came a cropper when plating the car. Luckily he was able to fit a spare from a scrap Zafira. As a newbie, I con't figure out why carrying a spare is a licensing condition. Surely if you had a flat whilst on a job you would call in to get another cab to finish the job. I can't imagine passengers on board would want to wait whilst the wheel is being changed. Any ideas? |

The condition may date from the days before radios and mobile phones, when a cabbie had to deal with such things by himself. Passengers may prefer the 5/10 minute delay to change a tyre over the 20/30 minutes it could take to get another cab to them in heavy traffic or an isolated location. BTW Not all taxis work for an office. |

But what if you are on a long run? Do customers have to wait an hour? I don't think I have ever had a car where I haven't used the spare at least one a year. Absolute necessity IMO. |

Appreciate the feedback. All useful food for thought. I didn't want to make a spectacle of myself though.

I think I've used a spare once in all my driving experience. I'm probably going to be sorry I said that

Guess you must be unlucky Sussex! Only had one in the last 300K, also if I bought a £50,000 VW Phaeton some do not come with a spare but means to re-inflate and seal the tyre, only of course if you hav'nt shreaded it! As is the case with many new cars these days. The lot cheaper Honda Accord for example. Perhaps if things change and we can use other companies close to where the incident happens(cross border hiring?!!) it would not be a problem to get another car to you fairly quickly.
