How many of your licensing authority’s licensing officers or licensing enforcement officers have been made redundant, taken voluntary redundancy, retired with a bronze, silver or golden handshake in the last, year, two years, or three years?

If they have been made or taken redundancy [voluntary of otherwise], or retired with a sizeable financial severance payment, have those financial severance payments been paid out of the licensing budget?

If they have, have the licensing fees been ‘hiked’ to cover the shortfall in the licensing budget caused by these one-off huge settlements?

If, for example, your licensing authority’s Head of Licensing retired after being employed by the local authority for the past 43 years, but had only been employed as a licensing officer for the last seven years of his 43 years of service, having served in other departments in his earlier career with the local authority, would you think it equitable that the licensing department pick up the whole severance package tab?

In such cases, should any of the severance packages be charged to the licensing department’s budget?

Or should such severance packages be paid out of the local authority’s general budget?

Are there any Ombudsman or District Auditor decisions on these matters?

Your thoughts gentlemen and ladies please!

I think something different is happening, but we are still getting the bill for it.

If a licensing officer goes, then in many cases they are being replaced by staff from different council departments, saving the council from making them redundant.

Whether or not they are suitable for the licensing job, is neither here nor there.

Dumping grounds are the words that spring to mind.

If the taxi licensing section is supposedly self financing......why is there redundancies.....and if they are.....then shouldnt the license fee payer benefit?

One would think that with one less body to pay wages for the license fee payer should indeed pay less for thier license, but, as BC alludes to the fact there is the question of who pays the pension/redundancy money?

Ours keep recruiting, a young kid has just joined a few months ago to learn the ropes and I think that makes him officer number 12 in the office, it does cover all licenses though not just cabs.

you can bet on the real facts and figures being better hidden than anyone will ever find them, or get fed up looking for them

im thinking just driving for someone else would be a far simpler and cheaper option, insurance, potholes, council and fuel alone are costing me nearly £8000 a year
