After getting my CRB back in 5 working days all I was waiting for was my DVLA check. Due to them working to rule slow wasn't the word. For the last 4 weeks I kept phoning the Council up asking them if it had come back?

Yesterday I got a phone call from the Council informning me that the DVLA wouldn't issue clearence because my signature didn't match the one they have on their database.

Off I go to the Council office with my Driving licence to fill in another DVLA form, the nice man Andrew at the Council couldn't apologise enough and said there was nothing wrong with the signature I submitted.

He informed me that the Council's post had already gone so advised me to post it myself as I'll catch the last post.

My badge runs out next week so it looks like I might be off the road for a few weeks.

Is there any wonder they are closing DVLA offices??

Not if they want to keep on best terms with the Ombudsman.

Nidge2, All the council have to do is issue the badge and if there is something wrong with the DVLA check they can revoke it.
Why do they need a DVLA check anyway???

Ask for a temporary licence until they sort it out.

The DVLA check is a self-imposed burden by your LA, and the parlous state of the DVLA's operation is hardly your fault.

They won't accept that.

I've asked them for a temporary licence until it comes back? I got a blank look as if to say, "We can't issue temporary badges".

Email the ombudsman and explain everything, and ask why the council should require a DVLA check every time you go for a renewal.
At first application OK, but on renewal ??? its pointless
Are there any other councils in the UK that require this check?? ours dont

It's a 3yr mandate you have signed so they can request information any time for 3yrs,so I don't see why you have to do it every year, also it must be there fault if they haven't requested the info early enough as the 3 yrs mandate provides, loss of earnings claim if they don't renew

Verbal confirmation can be made on an individual’s entitlement to drive.  In line with the Data Protection Act 1998, the driver must provide consent before an enquiry is made by phoning DVLA on 0300 790 6801.  Once consent has been given, an enquiry can be made by calling 0906 139 3837 to obtain that person’s entitlement to drive.  Lines are open 08.00 am – 7.00 pm Monday – Friday and 08.00 am – 2.00 pm on Saturday at a cost of 49p per minute. (Average call handling time is 92 seconds.)

Alternatively, the driver can be present when you phone and can provide consent as part of the phone call or as part of a 2-way conference call.
