How does it work?

If like us up here you have to Licence a car for three years paid for by 3 individual yearly Installments. and say you bought a car which was 13 months old. Technically if you were to Licence it after six years of use you would not be able to as the car at that time would be 7 yrs and 1 month old at that point, which would mean it would not be under the 10 years of age at the expiry point of its third and last 3 year licence cycle.

Can you Licence a car for less than its 3 years or would your car be to old after it entered its 6th year of age?

One of the Hackneys in our town has reached the end of it's life. It is now over 10 years old. The owner submitted the car for test before the plate ran out and the council obviously refused to relicense it due to the age policy. The owner has appealed againt this decision and has subsequently lost that appeal. He has 21 days from the decision to appeal to the magistrates court. The council say that he can continue to use the car until the 21 days have elapsed. This will be on Monday 5 March. However the plate expired on the 1st March (yesterday) This means that effectivly he is using an unlicensed vehicle. The council have also stated that should the owner appeal to the magistrates court, he can continue to use the vehicle until that appeal is heard. A couple of questions spring to mind. First, how does he stand with his insurance? second assuming that he appeals to the magistrates and loses, should he be paying for a license for the time since the plate expired.

Surely for the insurance to be valid it must have a current license ?

I got an email from one of the "team" saying that they assume that the insurance will be valid. Now what is it they say about assumption being the mother of all f**k ups?

The council need to issue a new HC licence and plate until the appeal is disposed of. Has the proprietor in question contacted Mr Schiller at Dennings?

Here a car has to be less than 6 years old at the first licensing and off when they reach 10 years old. However if the plate is due for renewal the day before the 10th aniversary, you get the full years plate so the car will be very nearly 11 when it comes off the road.
