Hi just a question to all and sundries to set up private hire as under standing you have to get operators licence from most councils though out the land . The operators licence requires address from where you operate your service office ect now some put there home address as their base so they are operating a business from home with a licence ? Now when dose commercial rates come in to this situation because your council has licence that property to do business just another question that requires an answer |

If you run a business from home you will have to pay the correct rates, also you might require planning permission? |

you are liable to pay business rates when one room in your house is given over solely to business use only and usually you can only run 2 vehicles on a home-based ops licence before planning permission is required for change of use |

Thanks I would imagine most private hire small operators (owner drivers who just have one or maybe two cars and take bookings direct) don't have or possibly need planning permission. After all, all they're doing is answering their phone from a prospective customer to note down a booking, or simply receving a text on their mobile phone or an e-mail, again on their mobile phone or their home computer. Why would they need planning permission when all is being done is the operator just looks/answer their phone and note details of their booking in a notebook/diary? Unless customers visit their home address for base pick ups - then yes, I'd imagine planning permission is required along with public liability insurance. |

But if someone is working from home and using it as a base and going in and out on jobs 24/7 then if it's a quiet residential area I doubt if the neigbours would be happy, And if parking is at a premium and the family has a couple of cars as well as two licensed vehicles then the neighbours might consider that a bit unfair as well. |

Having a private hire op on the street would certainly lower the value of your house? |

In our L.A all PHs need a operators licence whether you work as a 1 man band or for a company . If you don not have a operators licence you do not get a badge. |

Every private hire driver must have a ops licence in our area. no ops licence no badge . lots of money to be made for the council. |
