My old car (2006, 140,000 miles and obviously well past it) needs its 4 month (age exempt) plate so if someone could loan me £180 id be most grateful, i paid it end of january and ill need it again end of October please... £540 a year instead of £180 seems a good idea --- IF your a council i can see me signing on given fuels up 50% in a few years, insurance is up and so is everything else good old Britain, at least we have the Olympics to look forward to (just fo clarity, my plate now is £180 every FOUR months) |

I just read the PH regs which state ALL private hire are liable for THREE tests per year (before too old) but they dont do it..... sorry admin, im a bit wound up..... |

I think that all licenced vehicles can be tested up to 3 times per year. In our town if a vehicle is over 8 years old it must have 2 tests per year. We recently had an evening council check so I have a couple of vehicles that have already had 3 checks in the last 9 months. I have been told that the council can't ask me to have them tested again until their plate runs out.

In Plymouth though with the Plymouth City Council Act 1975 para 8 (1) we could be up to 4 times annually. One of the few areas of statute we could potentially be worse off than the rest of you. |

I dont object to being tested 3 times a year, the current "withing age limit" PH regs say "may be tested 3 times per year" but they dont do it, and thats with a 1 off annual charge of £180 (ish) so why can they then turn around and only plate me for 4 months (its a 4 month plate, not 12 month with 3 tests) the day the cars 6 years from 1st registration? and worse still, make it sound like they are doing me a favour letting me keep the car plated! |

I would guess that you could always take the matter to court. When we had limos, they were only given a six months plate. |

That seems very harsh you should not be paying the same for 4 months as other cars do for 12 months we have twice a year testing but we pay seperately for it and as long as the vehicle passes it's "mid term" test and the paperwork goes in all is well otherwise council removes the plate |

Options A) Carry on with this car paying treble the plate fees per year B) Buy a Lactetti/Proton/Crap wagon for £1500 which is 2009 or newer C) (My favourite) Buy a Cat C or D and get it put back on the road (or a non-recorded damaged car) D) Do a deal with a local firm, swap a some hours driving for the use of a car (saving me plate and ops licence fees) E) Jack in and forget it all (then the same LA can pay my rent and rates - revenge is sweet) |

Take them to court pointing out the best practice guidance that says age should not come into it You could try the council ombudsman first though |

our LA's "test" can include a pukka MOT for £3, i hope the garage charges more cos im having an MOT every time just to hurt the LA from now on..... |

ive absolutely no compunction or guilt about plating elsewhere (i.e. Berwick) if it keeps me working ill also pay any base anywhere to help me out, my car is always maintained and totally all good My LA have forced me back into a corner and a wounded animal is always dangerous |
