Hello,

Our local authority (Barnsley MBC) in their wisdom have now changed our badge renewal process, they are asking us to deposit our original driving licenses along with our renewal application form in a box at civic hall, to be dealt with at their convenience; we are assured that our driving licenses will be returned within a few working days.

The trade in Barnsley find this totally un acceptable and are trying to fight this issue; Both Private Hire and Hackney Carriage Associations have objected to the process.

The reason for my posting is:

Does anyone know if this is actually legal? Has any other authority used the same process? Who is responsible if any DVLA licenses go astray?

We would appreciate any links to this issue that have occured in the past or any advice from anyone in the know.

Thanks and regards
Stuart
Secretary, Barnsley Private Hire Association.

Well if for any reason you get a producer from the Police, would they accept "it's lolling around somewhere in the Council and will be returned to me when they feel like it".

I that were my LA they could whistle.

If they asked to photocopy and pass straight back, no problem.

The police, including those good folks from the traffic police have direct links to the DVLA which shows you picture within seconds.

They don't need to see your license, just your mush.

They need to see it to make sure that they can award prizes for all the points you have collected on it Sussex, and to make sure you have grassed yourself up to them in the allotted time.

ffs they know who I am, I regularly report my misdemeanors in taxitalk, and they get a copy, so why would I need to do that?

Mine too, but for 90% + it will.

But is the worst case scenario being alluded to here, something that should be top of the list of driver concerns in Barnsley?

Is there any wonder with the amount of forged driving licences coming into the UK? It's a wonder all Councils don't do this.
