I have been sent a draft copy of a petition the drivers of Falkirk intend signing, with a view of presenting it to Falkirk Council. I have asked for the author's permission to post it here and they, and I, would welcome any input the members of this forum may care to make.

We, the undersigned, taxi drivers of Falkirk District, object to the current disorder, disservice and lack of support from Falkirk Council licensing department.

Public safety, licensing breaches and legal issues have all been raised with the licensing department. These issues have not been adequately resolved, and problems continue. The licensing department are unable to effectively monitor and enforce licensing laws, support the law abiding drivers, or protect the public.

There are currently approximately 700 taxi drivers operating in Falkirk, however there is not one single full time member of Falkirk Council staff designated solely to the taxi trade.

We call upon the council to:

* Restructure and improve the licensing department staff levels and operating hours, to better reflect the 24/7 taxi trading times and volume of licences in circulation.

* Introduce processes & procedures to efficiently and proactively monitor and enforce licensing laws and public safety issues which have been raised.

The only thing I would add is that they ask for a meeting with the relevant parties to discuss the issues.

Thoughts?

If they do as asked, your fees will go up.

The council wont want this to be put before the council, so I expect every effort to be made to come to an early resolution.

However I would persevere as clearly your local trade has the right hump, and your grievances need to be heard.
