Don't have dates or reg no on our plates (HC), same ones stay with you unless you lose one. PH have reg no and dates on theirs as they have been known to have been cloned or used on different cars in the past

This happened to me last year, but it was only for a couple of days.

I rang the LA and they told me to drive on the old plates until the new were available and keep the receipt, that they had given me, handy.

That would be illegal down here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as the licence renewal application is submitted before the due date then the onus is then on the council to do the necessary?

So if the expiry date is on the plate and the renewal application is submitted at the last minute then it'll normally be a few days before the necessary is done.

Our LA encourages early applications for this very reason, but there's no legal obligation, so it's not unusual to see cars with expired plates running around perfectly legally.

But of course, according to the likes of Mr Casey and the Law Commission, councils know best.

At least they agree on something :D

mine is subject to "age exemption" though, i only get a 4 month plate (stamped with dates) so i have three different plates per year

officially if my plate expires and i havent renewed it prior to expiry i cant then HAVE a plate, so........

it has expired and i have no new plate...

where do i sign on?

Isn't it an insurance thing? The vehicle is required to display a valid plate to be insured. This was discussed on here a few weeks ago when our LA told a driver he could drive his taxi with an expired plate.

I may be wrong, but if the licence is being renewed doesn't the law state that as long as the application and fee are submitted before the expiry date then the licence remains in force?

The plate may be 'expired', but that's not the licence as such, it's just a physical representation of it.

Maybe a bit like renewing your insurance over the phone at the last minute - you could be covered yet the certificate of insurance in your possession may be out of date until the new one is received.

As I recall it the cases discussed previously were slightly more complicated than a standard renewal.

i heard its all online now and once a claim is made you dont haveto turn up every 14 days to sign, is that right, cos the bus fare there is £5

I wouldn't know, haven't signed on since Major was PM.
I heard you can do it all on the phone nowadays.

It is a failure to display issue. You can pay for your car tax disc online and have a receipt for it but you still can't legally take the car on the road until you have the disc displayed.
