Can anyone assist with advice please

In London encountering problems around eye sight tests TFL T&PH insist in using DVLA Group 2 requirements on medicals consequently Drivers are falling foul of eye sight requirements the question is do other Licencing authorities also use DVLA group 2 requirements or is there another route??


There are Drivers with Advanced motoring qualifications being denied licences and strangely enough their eye sight would be considered ok for a PPL Private Pilots Licence.

I would very much welcome any information on this Capt ? Susex MrT?????????????????????????????

We have DVLA Group 2 eye-sight tests in Brum.

They are not carried out correctly, because if you've ever taken an eye test at an optician you will have noticed that the eye sight test chart [alphabetic letters reducing in size] is always illuminated.

Our Occupational Health department never have their chart illuminated and believe me it makes a great deal of difference.

Have you ever noticed how much better your eyesight is on a very bright summer's day as opposed to on a dull winter's morning?

I would guess that a lot of those that are failing eye tests do have perfectly good eyesight, but that their eyesight is not being tested under the correct conditions and possibly not at the correct distance from the eye sight test chart.

Many eye test including at opticians are now conducted using a mirror in a smaller room with the eye sight test chart on a wall BEHIND the person being tested but being reflected into a mirror on a wall in front of the applicant. Under these conditions it is critical for the distance from the chart to the mirror to be measured very accurately, as any error in distance will be multiplied by two.

Really, in such conditions the original source eye sight test chart [not the mirror] should be illuminated and the test should be carried out in a darkened room.

My advice to you Dear Kcufing Comrade is get in touch with the natioanl opticians' representative body and see if they can email you the conditions under which their members are obliged to carry out eye sight tests.

I would expect them to tell you some of the following information, or these could be questions you could ask of them;

1. The minimum light conditions [in lumens] under which eye tests should be carried out.
2. The distance from the applicant's eye to the eye sight test chart, bear in mind if a mirror is used the distance is from the applicant's eye, to the mirror plus from the mirror to the eye sight test chart.
3. If a mirror is used in the eye sight test, should that mirror be completely flat.
4. If the mirror is not flat [unlikely], but concave or convex to what degree.
5. The sizes of all the eye sight test chart letters [I believe there are slightly different charts] and the respective distances at which applicant should be tested with each size of letter chart.

There's probably one or two other relevant questions which I forget at present, but that shoud be enought to keep you going and if you speak to them on the phone other questions make pop up during the conversation.

Once you have and are armed with this information, essentially it should be in writing, start asking questions of the eye testing procedures employed by TfL.

Brummie much obliged for your advice I would ensure of course that the eye site test was repeated at a major ophthalmic hospital the problem is the standard required by DVLA group 2! Do other lincecsing authorities inssist in such a high standard? If not can we apply that in london?

As for responding to a kfuc--ng trot why not were all in the same industry why wouldnt we assist each other and anyway a bit good natured rudery livens the day up I reckon sure we likely have VERY different opinions so what who gives a flying friar tuck ???????????

Down here everything is Group 2.

However Gov Best Practice only says it is common for councils to use Group 2, which indicates to me some don't.

So if any council out there doesn't, could folks assist Terry by either posting on here, or for the lurkers out there e-mail Alex at info@taxi-driver.co.uk ?

That might be a factor, but I would imagine the main problem is that under the normal Group 1 standard you can get away with having a weak eye (or only one eye, as per Grandad's manor) whereas the Group 2 standard is a lot more stringent in that regard, and 'monocularity' is definitely out. Also, if you need glasses or contact lenses that's irrelevant under the Group 1 standard, but with Group 2 you also have to reach an acceptable standard without wearing you glasses or contacts.

As far as I can make out the bad eye under Group 2 has to be the same standard as the good eye under the Group 1 standard, and the Group 2 good eye a fair bit better than the Group 1 good eye.

group 2 here as well; i dont have a list of councils and their medical standards though.

personally, I think group 2 medicals are sh*te as they take away a doctors discretion.
