I can't believe that I missed this one completly, with me being the pedantic one and all that.
Last year when our tariff increase was being debated and voted on, the proposal voted for by a majority of 6-5 after 18 proxy votes were discounted, was a change in the distance of the flag fall from .5 of a mile to .3 of a mile. our running mile at rate 1 is £1.40 so the increase was stated at 28 pence for the whole journey. Are you with me so far? The figures for rate 2,3 and 4 were proposed as follows. 37 pence for the journey at rate 2. 43 pence for the journey at rate 3 and 56 pence for the journey at rate 4. These figures were advertised in the paper alongside the statement " for the first 1/3 mile".
Anyone spotted the problem yet?

I only spotted it when we were having the meters changed this morning. Someone has changed the proposal from .3 of a mile to 1/3 of a mile. The chap from the council, when I pointed it out said that it was the same thing. I told him it wasn't and the diference was 12.5% so we have actually got,
rate 1 is 24.5 pence
rate 2 is 32.4 pence
rate 3 is 37.6 pence
rate 4 is 49 pence
I am not a happy bunny. not happy at all!

It wasn't a snide comment. we have 2 drivers in our borough that only have one eye. One of them has actually run over 2 pedestrians in the last year and he still has a badge.

So you're around 4p per job worse off than you thought you would be? Hardly seems the end of the world.

But it's no wonder your council rely on the meter mob to reset the meters correctly, since they probably wouldn't know how to test them properly anyway by the sounds of it. :D

With all the increases in fuel, insurance etc. since the last rise 4 years ago, the rise of 28 pence was bad enough. It would have taken over 7,000 journeys at 28p just to make up the loss each year. it will now be nearer 8,000. No one here does anything like that.

0.3 of a mile is not 1/3 of a mile, or 1/3 of a mile is actually 0.3333333333333333333333333333333333333 recurring of a mile.

The question is, what were your meters eventually set at?

They were set at 1/3 mile.

You must have had the original proposals in the minutes of your application, and then surely it would have been published (under objections) in the press = proof.

If it is not as applied/minuted/published then you have every right to go back to them, as it is flawed.

The published tariff was in the paper as,
For the first 1/3 mile (increase of 28p over the whole journey)
Nobody spotted that they had put 1/3 and not .3 all anyone looked at was the "increase of 28p over the whole journey".

Our last rise, the first for 4 years was just 10p extra per mile. However the meters only go up in units of 20p so any journey less than two miles costs the same as before the rise.
Unfortunately I'd say only 5% of journeys are two miles or over and 50% go less than a mile ! Even so the rise only covers the same increase in fuel so no rise in profit at all.
