Meter on or off when on contracts?

Post subject:  Meter on or off when on contracts?
Hi just a quick question about meters and hackney carriages. I am aware under section 66 of the 1976 act a meter does not have to be used outside the district as long as you have quoted before you depart but how does it work for contractual work like school contracts or private invoice contracts? Does you meter need to be on when you are doing council jobs in district even though the driver gets a set fare payable in arrears.?

then tell your base your not doing the job again for half the metered fare (paid in 6 weeks).... :badgrin: :badgrin: :badgrin:


I would have to give a big discount and refund if i ran mine on a meter

No offence is committed if the meter isn't used. It is however an offence to charge more than is permitted by the table of fares in respect to journeys undertaken that both start and finish within the district boundaries or start within the district boundaries in which the vehicle and driver are licensed, end outside those boundaries and no fare or rate of fare has been agreed in advance of hiring.

If you have a pre-booked time, put the meter on at that time.

If it's a straight away job, put the meter on when you first engage the customer.

If you have already quoted an agreed fare you have to stick to it, but make sure it's slightly under or the same as a metered fare. If the punter has agreed a given price over the phone as a pre booked (PH) then you don't have to meter it.... If you meter it and it's under the quoted fare, charge the metered fare.... You'll likely get a tip at the other end.... :wink:

Some councils, ours definitely included, think they can re-write parts of the 1976 Act to suit whatever mirky agenda.

Engaging a meter when a fare has been agreed in accordance with Sections 66 and 67 (journey starts outside the district) or if the punter uses you several times a week for the same journey and knows the fare can be a recipe for unnecessary conflict between driver and passenger and for what, to appease some vindictive, anal retentive petty bureaucrat?
