Taxi Driver Online

I would like to try for a taxi test as I am bored of the 9-5 grind..
So I need to to do a theory test...and then the practical and test. How do I prepare for the the theory test..is there a DVD or a book I can go through?
Also.. I'm 35 and have been driving for 2 years. What kind of insurance should I expect?
Also.. What is a cheap car to run and maintain?

There isn't a separate taxi test that I know of. In most areas there's a knowledge test that varies between areas, the London one can take years so I've heard. In some areas private hire drivers don't need a knowledge test.

There's no such thing as a cheap reliable car. Lease a new one that's got a warranty, that way if it breaks down, it costs you nothing and gives your new business a head start over others. an older car may seem cheaper, but the repair costs will outweigh the lease costs.

Make sure you cost your work properly. Taxi and private hire driving is no longer a guaranteed way to make money.

Re: leasing, read the cancellation terms carefully, just in case taxi driving isn't for you. If you cancel they may charge you 90% of the outstanding payments, but contracts differ. You will also need to estimate your annual mileage, depending what sort of work you do (local or distance/airport runs). Best to underestimate, most contracts allow you to increase your limit if you find yourself going over, though not usually the other way round. Also ensure you are able to insure a lease car for hire & reward as you won't be the owner of the car, also, some contracts allow you to have the V5 in your name, so you'll be the registered keeper, and you may need the V5 to get the vehicle licensed.

That's my view on leasing anyway, agreed it will be under warranty, and you'll probably get more work in a new car.

There are about 350 councils doing it 350 different ways, so it's hard to tell you exactly what to do and expect pre-license.

Once you get you license your insurance will be £2,000 + if you are lucky, and the best car isn't necessarily what you want. To start with an old sh**ter might be worth investing in for a year or so.

Well initially I don't want to be doing it full time. Eventually maybe.
Im in Birmingham which I know is probably over saturated with drivers anyway.
The licensing office here have suggested that I buy a booklet which helps with the knowledge test. It's £15.

Also, the council private hire stickers, do they have to be displayed at all time? Even when not using it as a taxi? Initially I don't want people at my work place to know I'm driving a taxi that's why.

Ask the council about the stickers, but, if they're stickers surely they'll be stuck to the vehicle anyway as will the plate.

You need to speak to licensing.

If you are on a firm then I suspect they will want you to advertise their firm, if you are working solo then you might be able to get some sort of executive exemption.
