This is an area that I have never understod. If a Council make an it that all Hackneys Have to have meters what is the council responerbily in that what do the council have to do. Can then a Hackney Firm who runs 28 Hackenys allow then to have other Tariffs to rum below the Councils fare by half that is to say the council fare are £160 some driver have tariffs on the meter that startes at 80p which is now causeing problems on the rank. can any one tell be what is the facts about meters. |

The LA sets the maximum fare that can be charged in its area. It's down to the driver or firm if they want to charge less than what's shown on the meter, simples! |

My view is that all hackney meters should be set to the council's maximum tariff. If drivers choose to discount then so be it, but the meter should display the council's set tariff for hackneys. PH can have whatever rate they wish on the meter. |

Sussex, we agree. If a meter is set to below the maximum, technically the driver could demand more than the fare shown and defend his demand by saying it is less than the fare would have been if the meter was correct - a quagmire. There are still 2 areas I believe, that do not have meters in Taxis, lunacy in my opinion. I think meters should be: 1. Mandatory. 2. Checked and sealed by Enforcement Officers, not meter Agents. After testing over a measured distance. 3. Checked at random by Licensing Officers or Trading standards Officers again testing over a measured distance. I foresee that in the near future meters will have to produce receipts, either printed or, if the powers that be have the intelligence, by transfer to a mobile phone. I hope it achieved through natural wastage rather than all of us having to get new meters all at the same time. |

Every meter in the Borders is set to the council tariff sheet, and the meter checked on a measured distance, if correct it is sealed with a tamper proof council seal, (this just disintegrates if its removed, for any reason and the vehicle has to stay off the road until rechecked and sealed) All cars are then issued at the time with a new tariff sheet, drivers are then free to discount from the fare shown at the destination. |

I am intrigued Skippy. By your own "Logic" there should be no difference at 5 or 6 passengers, yet because it is on your tariff you think we should all go with that. Astounding. By a better logic, increasing with each additional passenger may be seen by many to be a far better option. I have over the years, found myself roped in to act as a house remover (or at least contents of a flat) and some things are very heavy or damn awkward. You had better believe I am going to be putting the armchair on as an extra, & the coffee table, fridge, rolled up mattress, 6 bulging suitcases etc. By the way, when someone is doing a flit because they haven't paid the rent, you are going to want Money upfront. |
