It'll please a few of the seasoned Tax Dodgers around here, If they Stick to the Back roads there's a fair chance they'll never be pinged by the police.

We have a car that is due to be taxed at the end of this month so I guess that it won't get a tax disc. Interestingly our council will give the driver and owner of the vehicle 6 penalty points for failing to display the tax disc. Roll on Wednesday.

The rozzers simply type your registration number into their computer and know if the car is taxed, insured and has or needs an mot.

The number plate recognition systems on motorways and other roads do the same.

Big brother watch ranted on about cameras in taxis abusing privacy, yet I've heard nothing about this type of privacy issue.

Ah but it doesn't work like than now. The registered keeper will automatically get a fine if they have not taxed the car. Tax discs no longer transfer with a vehicle. If you sell a car with a tax disc, the tax is not valid because the seller will automatically get a refund on the taxdisc and the buyer must tax the vehicle immediately. Of course this will mean that the seller will lose the remaining tax for the month that the vehicle was sold and the buyer will lose the value of the tax in the month that they bought the vehicle.

It will just mean - instead of cars selling with tax - you will adjust the price

"12 months tax included" (price discounted)

When you buy a new car you just notify the DVLA and they adjust their records accordingly.

Not anymore Nidge. The seller automatically gets the unused tax back and the buyer has to re tax the car.

What if you pay by direct debit?

I have just tried the online tax checking service. I taxed a vehicle yesterday but it may not show on the system for 5 days. So if the vehicle is stopped in the next couple of days it will say that it isn't taxed.

From what I can make out of the new rules, current tax discs can also be removed from your car from today. You do not need to display any tax discs at all.
