I am now reaching the age of retirement, my mate has offered me some part time work running hospital patients about at so much a mile, he says I don't need hire or reward insurance and my car does not need testing or registering with the local authority, as all the people doing it just use their family cars and have to pass no test, is this right. |

It is right....its a "voluntary service" and so long as theres no element of profit in the eyes of HMRC (meaning you dont get more than the RAC figure for what it costs to rnu a car) they arent bothered, but tell your insurers i ran plated and unplated cars for years with2 ambulance services you might not get any waiting time though HOWEVER.....if your mate pays you it might not be legal.....whereas it would be if the ambulance service paid you |

If you charge less than 45p (I think) a mile you are ok. Quite why it's ok is quite beyond me, and will only change following a few deaths.

No he wont if hes paid by the Ambulance service, he just needs to inform his insurers of his "volunteer" work Under the RAC/AA "costs to run" figure there is no element of profit, HMRC arent interested either |
