A report: 'Our Committee have just attended the meeting of the Licensing and Regulatory Committee at the Civic Offices. The L & R Committee decided not to have a tariff increase, mainly due to recent fuel price drops and because our Association had been instructed by members to have no increase. The same L and R Committee then decided not to allow any kind of statement on the tariff card which would have allowed taxi drivers to be reimbursed ‘Card Charges’ when the customer pays by Credit or Debit Cards. The councillors did not like the situation when a customer paying by card, jumping into two different taxis, carrying out identical trips and being charged two different amounts because the ‘Card Charges’ are different. LO explained to Councillors that their legal department have confirmed it is illegal for taxi drivers to charge a customer 'card charge' if those charges are not on the tariff card. LO's boss explained that some companies have to rent the 'Card Charge' equipment so that it might cost some Taxi Companies more than what they are trying to claim back. But no joy. Councillors want all those drivers that take cards to absorb the charge, or for Taxi companies to pursue all the ‘Card Charge Companies’ to persuade them to charge the same percentages. (What world do they really live in?) Then they would consider putting a statement on the tariff card.' Unfortunately, no input or rebuttal is permitted once the Council Officer has given his advice to the committee. The next comedy night is a sell out!!!! |

T(PC)Act1847 I'm not sure about the rest of the trade but, as a company, most of our card transactions are outside the borough so we just refuse cards inside the borough. There will always be an ATM close by that will take the card! |

The Licensing Committee are saying the trade cannot make card charges because it does not give permission on the Tariff Card. Why is it different because the journey starts or finishes out of the borough? |
