I have just had a chap round looking to become a taxi driver. He has passed the knowledge test and medical. He is just waiting for his DBS to come back and then he will be issued with his badge. So I ring our insurers up to see about adding him to the policy to be told that he can't be covered on the policy until he has held his badge for 2 years. How is anyone supposed to work in this job?

I suspect your insurance is lower due to the 2 year issue. Ask them how much to just insure him.

I will be. They have asked me to send a copy of his badge when he gets it and a copy of both side of his photocard drivers license. They also want a copy of the paper counterpart of the license. I said but that will be obsolete before he gets his badge and the DVLA say to destroy it. They were adamant that they still needed a copy of it.

Grandad, See this thread - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=26952 - and get your prospective driver to give them a check code. The insurance company can then view the record for themselves online.

We have 1 guy at the base who rents an E7, neither his badge NOR his DVLA licence are a year old yet, hes about 30, the base upped his base rent to £335 a week to cover the extra loading but i think he was lucky to get insurance

our lads 23 this year and looking at getting a badge but ive told him he wont be able to afford his own car or insurance for 2 years at least

your right tho, its killing the trade by stifling recruitement, id need to poach a middle aged driver (40 at least) with a 5 year old badge and perfect driving record and even then it would be £1500 extra

I did tell them it will be all on line and the paper part would be obsolete but they insist that they will still need the paper counterpart.

Tell them to do a conference call with the DVLA with your driver who'll have his details to hand, he just reels them off to the DVLA while the insurance company listen to the DVLA's response.

The fact is these coucils dont WANT to go digital+fast as it erodes what they can charge, before long i can see the DBS being an online form connected to the UK passport service and DVLA, it all ties up nicely

They don't ask for NI number here, yet.
