What is the position regarding a side step on an E7?
The situation is this. Over a year ago an owner driver apparently hit something in the road late at night. It was only in the morning that he noticed that the side step on his E7 was very badly damaged, in fact it was beyond repair so he took it to a garage and had it removed. Now he still has the ramp that is fully functional and he has bought a caravan step to assist passengers should they require it.
Yesterday he was called into the Council and informed that unless he re-instated the side step within 28 days his vehicle license would be revoked because the vehicle no longer suitable as a vehicle with disabled access.
He has not yet received his letter giving the details of how this has breached the licensing conditions but I will update when it arrives.
Any thoughts?

Is it a legal requirement to have the step? The owner has said that it will cost £500 to replace and he says he doesn't have the money.

What would happen if he de-plated the vehicle and re submitted it for approval without a side step? maybe not even as a WAV?

I do not know...here..it would not pass. as the part is missing.....ask your licencing team...we only have one type of licence here..you can put on a saloon or wav as and when you see fit.

The council never actually inspected the vehicle. inspections are carried out at 3 garages in the town. There is nothing on the inspection reports that mention side steps.

The part is an optional extra. you can buy the vehicle without the step.

We would probably get failed on that one. The step is part of the make up of a WAV, as such without it, it would make the vehicle inaccessible for many passengers.

Why? When there is the ramp.

To be honest, I am not that bothered with this one. It isn't my vehicle. I will pass on the comments from here and then it is up to the owner/driver to decide if he wants to fit a new step or fight to keep it as it is.
I think the licensing team are just looking for ways of adding time to our licenses to justify the cost. I mean, a couple of weeks ago we received a call to say that one of our cars had a headlight bulb out. We had to produce the vehicle for inspection and it took 2 officers to come out to inspect it. Go figure. :?

You only have to produce if they serve a section 68 notice.
