Limo mean

HEN night and birthday party revellers could be forced to sit quietly and behave in their stretch limos and fire engines.

New rules could regulate the "novelty vehicle" business, including leather only seating.

Gone would be the days of hanging out of limo windows cheering brides-to-be.

Instead partygoers would have to wear their seatbelts and behave while touring the streets.

Council chiefs want to make sure people behind the wheel of a limo are fit and responsible to drive a public service vehicle.

The checks would be similar to those already in place for taxis. They may even require that all limo seats are made of leather free from rips and that any animals on board are kept firmly in the rear.

Councillor Campbell Snoddy, who sits on the council's licensing panel says novelty vehicles can be old and unsafe and could cause accidents.

Inverclyde Council is teaming up with other local authorities in the west of Scotland to bring in the new licensing system by spring 2006.

Councillor Snoddy said: "We're not trying to be spoilsports but we have to have the public's safety as our number one priority.

“I think that when the public travel in one of these vehicles they need to be assured that everything about the vehicle is correct and subject to inspection in the same way that taxis are."

Brian Collins, director of Ultimate Limos in Earnhill Place, Greenock has a fire engine to hire and said: "There are obvious dangers if vehicles have not been maintained or serviced. We take our vehicles to the council for voluntary inspections anyway.

"This is just another way for the council to make money from licensing."

Tony McKenzie, manager of ABC Limos in MacDougall Street, Greenock said he would abide by the rules but could not see the difference between limos and other cars hired for events like weddings, which will remain unlicensed.

So let's have the old London minicab for the whole country then. :?
