can you license one vehicle with 2 different councils at the same time ?

yes you can there is case law on this.

you can have a taxi in authority a but private hire in authority b

but there is no clarity as to whether a taxi in authority a can be a taxi in authority b

I have actualy applied for licensing of a taxi in 2 zones of an authority
whilst this was not refused, I was persuaded not to persue this claim and the authority helped secure my ambition in another way.

Yes mate you certainly can, and it's widely used.

The main ones doing it are the insurance replacement cars. They have the vehicle registered in a number of areas, possibly more than a dozen at a time.

When the car is needed, a fitter changes the signs, meters, plate from one area to another. This must cost an absolute fortune.

But when they charge the insurance company £80/90 a day, I don't think we should be too sympathetic.

what i want to clarify is can the vehicle be a taxi.

The problem arises as to whether you work in a de-limited area or not.

If you work in an open area, then there is no reason why it can't be licensed as a HC elsewhere.

In a closed area it's difficult, and near impossible. If it is one of the restricted numbers then it's highly unlikely to be allowed to be used elsewhere, cos then the numbers would be down, and the council would have to increase the fleet to meet demand.

But if your car is off the road, and you can't get a replacement HC, then just drive a PH for a few weeks.

You might even earn a few quid more.

Here's a neat little wheeze for you:

Buy a Transit 12 seater. Remove 5 seats and convert it to a WAV. Licence as a Hackney in a non-restricted area, then dual license it as a PSV. Now, what are your limitations on operating area?

the reason i ask is because when dereg hits us i would like to be able to work different areas on different days.

depends whos driving, taxi drivers the area they are in plus 15 miles, if its a bus the traffic commission area plus 15 miles.

must be a ten point question?

I think the only problem you may have is the colour coding of the vehicle.

Say one manor has only white HCs, and the other has anything but.

But really there should be no reason, but obviously you will have to pay two sets of licensing costs, and have two sets of vehicle checks.

In my surrounding areas, we have about half a dozen different sets of HC vehicle IDs.

One is white with green stickers on, one black with white stickers, one a pot pourri of any combination you can think off, and one is only WAVs.

In other words you would struggle doing it in my area. But good luck in yours.

It can be used for private hire anywhere in the Country.

It can be used as a taxibus, anywhere within the DoT Traffic Area (plus 15), irrespective of what the regs are for Hackneys.

That was not me. In case it needed clarifying.

And I don't think dereg includes that allowance anyway.

it cannot you know read the traffic commission rules!

I've read most of the rules, and cant see anywhere that it cannot be used as above.
