Post subject:  DVSA driving assessment for new applicants

Good Morning,

I'm a licensing officer from a small district council hoping someone can help me with some information.

Anyone applying for a new driver's licence with us is required to undergo a DVSA driving assessment unless they have a driving qualification (eg HM Forces, emergency services, bus licence etc or similar).

I have a couple of London cabbies going through our application process at the moment and they have told me that when they got their PCO badges (1997) they had to undergo a practical driving test as part of that application.

Can someone confirm for me that this was the procedure at that time because if that is the case I will accept that as proof of a driving assessment thus saving them time and money.

It appears that TfL now require the DVSA assessment instead of carrying it out in house so if anyone can put dates to when this changed for me it would be helpful for future reference.

Any helpful information appreciated, thank you.

I'm pretty much certain prior to the DSA test the PCO used to do practical tests with their own examiners.

They did and I think the test was overseen by either ex or current police officers.

Seriously? You are a council licensing bod and your research involves asking random strangers on the Internet? FWIW when I got my badge for London in 2005 I had to take a DSA Driving test.

And you expect him to believe that?

You clearly missed the irony.
