Help cab firms to help you

AT this time of year with office parties and general festivities it can be a challenge to get a taxi-cab when you want one, especially at peak times on Friday or Saturday evenings when everyone seems to want a cab at the same time.

The cab company operators and telephonists are besieged by hundred of calls so help the cab companies to help you, please have the correct information to hand before you call. We can't pick you up if you don't know where you are and it helps the operators to co-ordinate other work if you know where you are being dropped off.

Be prepared to be flexible on time, many delays are caused by passengers who travel to a destination other than the one booked. To avoid disappointment and delays pre-book your journey in advance especially if you have a plane to catch and make sure that you have allowed sufficient time for the journey. Traffic delays do happen especially at peak times.

Many people are still confused by the two main different types of taxi-cab. It seems that the powers that be decided to change the names of Public Rank Taxis to Controlled Taxi-Cabs and Private Hire Cabs to Restricted Taxi-Cabs. The Controlled Taxi-Cabs (Public Rank Taxis) that have a large roof sign displaying the word 'taxi' are supposed to provide a service from the designated public ranks. Their fares are controlled by the States.

The Restricted Taxi Cabs (Private Hire Cabs) may be booked on the telephone and their roof sign must have the name of the company clearly displayed. The Restricted Taxi-Cab charges are slightly higher than the Public Rank Controlled Taxis. Why? The Public Rank Taxis sit on a taxi rank and wait for you to come to them. The Restricted Taxi-Cabs have operator and depot services to pay for and they drive to meet you and take you to your destination.

That said, at certain times, for some journeys the Restricted Taxi-Cab (Private Hire) fares are cheaper; for instance, short journeys around town after 11 pm and on Sundays during the day. When the Restricted Taxi-Cabs are not busy with pre-booked work they may be flagged down.

It is our company policy that our cars use the lower tariff on casual pick ups charging the same fare as the Controlled Public Rank Taxis. Please check with the driver if you haven't pre-booked your cab and ask for the lower fare. All our company cars should have a table of the tariffs in the cab.

Don't even think of drinking and driving, but don't get so drunk that a taxi-cab will refuse to pick you up. No driver wants a chuck-up in the car.

Wishing all a Happy Christmas.

In other words, the PH fares reflect real life economics, whereas the taxi fares are just numbers pulled from a hat
