Not sure I agree with the provisions for pricing out of town work. Making it up as they go along methinks. |

customers will hate that surely it would be easier to simplify it and make the start include the first 260 yards ? Mind you i agree with Skippy that's an expensive tarriff for a city where students probably make up a large proportion of fares |

How many customers actually look at a tariff sheet? |

I have to agree that this tariff is extremely poor in its layout. The “English” is appalling. For example “Then 20p for each 60 yards (54.86m) travelled up to 160 yards (146.30 metres)” So is that one 20p added on to the £2.60 flagfall, so at 160 yards total, or is it two times 20p and a missing 30 yards to a total yardage of 260 yards? Obviously it is the former, but it is not clear. The word “Travelled” is actually wrong, in a Taxi Tariff it not what has been covered but what is to come, correctly it should be phrased “for the next 60 yards (or part thereof)”. The Tariff (having reached 260 yards) then states that the next series of drops will occur at 220 yard intervals. (These are 1/8 of a mile also known as Furlongs) and will continue to do so until 10 miles. Problem here is that 80 multiples of 220 yards is 10 miles, 79 furlongs is 17380 yards and if you add the Flagfall and the next 60 yards you get to 17640 yards (or ten miles and forty yards). It moves then to drops of 195 yards. Trouble is 1/9 of a mile is actually 195.5555 recurring, so the meter will never tie in to a mile again, not that it ever did of course. My take on the Extras is that they are stupid. Firstly the extra £2.00 (which is incorrectly shown as “£2” it should be “£2.00” over Christmas etc. is simply an insult to Drivers that are prepared to work at these times. The Fouling charge (which should be £50.00 not £50) can and should be shown, but can’t be set as a maximum. If a fabric is destroyed or made unusable (when the beetroot soup stains the cloth on the seat permanently for example) the option of Civil Action is still a possibility. Credit and Debit card charges are next. If the Fare is £10.01 can the Driver add a £5.00 charge? Given the wording he or she may, or any charge they want in fact. I am in agreement with Sussex on the next bit. If a Journey leaves the District it is clear in Primary Legislation that a Driver may negotiate the fare, and, if an agreement is made, the meter is redundant and need not be used. In the paragraph they quote the LGMP Act 1976 S66, a byelaw (19(b)) and the TPC Act S54 and S55 but it is not dated, we know it is 1847 - but passengers don’t. The understanding by the Author of the tariff in regard to S66 of the LGMP is exactly wrong. The Byelaw says the meter must be used but does not mention “out of Licensing Area” and can’t trump Primary Legislation anyway with regard to the 1976 or 1847 Acts. All in all, this Tariff is an embarrassment to the Author and to the Manager who allows it to go forward. I would suggest that it actually brings Sheffield City Council into disrepute. Like many others Sheffield City Council should consult with the Plain English Campaign and have their Tariff transformed into something intelligent. They may like to ask an 11 year old to assist with their Mathematics as well. |
