Do you think there should be age restrictions on vehicles used for hire and reward. We have a 8 year policy in wycombe district with a test every year upto 6 years of age then 2 tests a year upto 8 years old. A vehicle can not be any more than 4 years old when first licensed.

That one test a year sounds good we have to have two a year up untill vehicle is five year old then four a year after that. Not cheap for test's and they always seem to find something wrong even on the new cars.

I think the age matters as much, or as less, as mileage.

Is a 4 year old motor with 200,000 on the clock better than a 10 year old motor with 100,000 on?

In other words does it really matter?

I disagree, cars should be replaced after 5 years max.

I sold on a Merc diesel 10 years old with 450,000, on the clock, today 14 months after disposing, it is still running as a taxi [Hack] looking far better than it did when I had it, and still fly's through the taxi test.

I would love to know if there are any LA's that impose unfair age restrictions on taxis, which also have age limits on the vehicles they use on school bus contracts ?

I think not !

Personally I think councils insisting on a 'new vehicle only policy' are acting completly unreasonable. Alas the courts have decreed it to be reasonable.

Maybe when the DfT guidance comes out in 2006 it might allow a bit more flexibility.

Your lucky we have a 7 year age limmit in the Scottish Borders.
Buy a brand new car and its tested even though its been through a rigouruse test at the factory now thats daft

I suppose they still have to test the meter etc, but I've heard of one or two new cars failing on mechanical matters.

cars that are new arent tested in B&H.
the meters are but not the motors.

When the London assembly report said that there are more over 70 year olds, then under 30 year olds, were they talking about London's cab drivers or their cabs?

We get a £50 discount on the test fee for a new car for the first year, but it still costs £245pa!!

Here in Renfrewshire we have a limit of 5 years old, then they are off the road

This was introduced a few yeras ago despite the previous no-age policy working perfectly well

The only ones to gain were the dealerships & the finance companies



I would like to see an age limit imposed on councillors, the ones in this area don't use taxis much, they all have bus passes
